Travelling THROUGH Yala (Southern Thailand)? Worth the risk?

My friends and are hoping to travel from Penang up through Malaysia into central Thailand. However I'm aware of the dangers of travelling through this region but I don't know whether that still exists enough to prevent us from travelling through? We were hoping to bus through this area, no stops, is it possible?
